The problem of men and women not being equal can be traced back to the Declaration of Independence.The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are created equal.There was no mention of women being equal, only men.At the time of the drafting of the document, the men had all the power.The document was even drafted by a man.Women were confined to the home to take care of the domestic housekeeping duties. Look no further than the home to see the first sign that men and women are not equal.The traditional role of the man was to work and the money he made would be used by all in the household.The traditional role of the woman was to stay home, take care of the children, clean the house, and cook.Because society has always associated money with power, the person bringing home the money had the power.The man often makes the final decision on all household matters because he has the money. The workplace is another place where men and women are not equal.The most obvious sign starts at the top.Look at the CEO of the corporation.The majority of CEOs are men.Women serving as CEOs are a rare sight.Another sign of the unfairness can also be found in the lower ranks.Men are often applauded for being assertive and giving orders.By giving orders, men are taking a leadership role.Demonstrating leadership ability is a quality that employers often look for.On the other hand, women who are assertive and give orders are not well liked in the work place.They are considered as bitches by men.For women to be well liked in the work place, they have to be subordinate to the men.The salary of men and women who do the exact same work differ.Women often make less than men even though they do the exact same thing.In 1990, the median income was $29,172 for men and $20,586 for women.The fact that women often hold lower ranking positions contribute to the !problem.There are many gender stereot ypes associated with certain jobs.Secretaries, nurses, and maids are associated with women.Corporate executives, lawyers, doctors, politicians, and construction workers are associated with men. The woman would change her last name to that of the mans.She also loses her first name in some instances too.When a piece of mail is addressed to both parties, the name reads Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.The womans name is not mentioned. Billy mentions how he goes to school and all the teachers were good to him and asked him how he was doing at school and patted him on his head. This, quite clearly what Billy expects from his teachers but the mere fact is that they couldnt care less about him. Billy demands attention and affection from the teachers in the school. Even a Good Morning, Billy would not go amidst in Billys books. He also mentions that when he comes home from school, he has chips and beans for his tea. Well, its no secret that even the poorest people can afford chips and beans for their tea. So why has Billy included this in his Tall Story? CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Crime is a part of our lives, it is everywhere! Controlling or eliminating crime and criminals is no easy task but it can not be ignored. Making sure those that are rightly accused to a just punishment is very important. There are many reasons why people commit crimes; some do it for the shear of enjoyment others do it to be able to survive. The death penalty should not be used for every crime, although I strongly believe it should be used for those who commit very violent crimes, such as murder. Deterrence is the means to punish those who commit crimes as an example and to create fear in others who might want to commit a crime. The death penalty is one way we use to create fear! Most people fear death one way or another. Ernest van den Hagg, in his article â€Å"On Deterrence and the Death Penalty† mentions, â€Å"One abstains from dangerous acts because of vague, inchoate, habitual and, above all preconscious fears† (193). Without this type of deterrence what would stop criminals that already in prisons for life keep from killing another inmate or a staff that works there? There are those that are against the death penalty called anti-death penalty advocates, they say that imprisonment by it self is enough to deter criminals, killing criminals is not needed! Hugo Bedau argues in his article, â€Å"Capital Punishment and Social defense† says, â€Å"Crimes can be deterred only by making would-be criminals frightened of being arrested, convicted, and puni shed for crimes† (301). According to Richard Seiter in his book â€Å"An Introduction Corrections† states that â€Å"From 1986 to 1997 the number of males that went to prison increased 70% while the number of females increased 118%† (210). It seems that just going to prison isn’t enough for some people. Without the death penalty insane people would kill others thinking they could get away with it and if not what’s the worst going to happened to them â€Å"Prison for life†! One could argue that the death penalty probably has saved someone’s life because it deterred someone from committing that act! Still anti-death penalty advocates believe that the death penalty is irreversible and that some people who really weren’t guilty are sentenced to death. Yes the death penalty is irreversible but the chance that an innocent person gets sentenced to death is extremely low. The judicial system goes threw extreme measures to insure this doesn’t happened! They do this by making sure that only when guilt is determined by clear and convincing evidenced be punished.
